What is Field Service Management?

For many organisations, efficiently managing a team of service technicians is one of the hardest operational tasks. This is because it involves so many different variables that until recently had to be monitored, controlled by human labour, and logged. It took a significant amount of time out of either your life or your employee's life. It also took a lot of precision to keep track of all the unpredictable changes that could occur at any time.

Aspects like delays, miscommunication, and incorrect or incomplete information inevitably cluttered many companies, and while electronic databases certainly did solve some of the pain points, they were still exceedingly prone to human error. As technology advanced, and systems began to communicate with each other more easily, the next step was to devise a technological solution that would assist with managing field service operations, relieving frustrated owners and employees of many of the inefficiencies from traditional process. The result was sophisticated field service management (FSM) technology.

Field service management (FSM) basically refers managing a company's resources that are employed at or on the way to the property of clients, rather than on company's property.

Some examples would include locating vehicles, managing worker activity, scheduling and despatching work, equipment maintenance, ensuring driver safety, and integrating the management of such activities with inventory, billing, accounting and other back-office systems.
